Drivetrain

Five-Speed:

The 2003 through 2006 models used an electronic 5-speed automatic transmission with driver-adaptive control. Driver-adaptive programming adjusts shifts points to the driver's current driving style. Touch Shift allows driver to manually downshift and allow upshifts by nudging the shift lever to the left or right from the Drive position. A display in the instrument cluster indicates selected gear range.

Gear Gear Ratio Overall Ratio MPH @ RPM
First 3.56 10.04 39 @ 6000 RPM
Second 2.19 6.18 64 @ 6000 RPM
Third 1.41 3.98 99 @ 6000 RPM
Fourth 1.00 2.82 130 @ 5575 RPM - electronically limited
Fifth 0.83 2.34 130 @ 4625 RPM - electronically limited

Reverse: 3.16:1 (R2 - Winter mode: 1.82:1)
Final Drive: 2.82:1

A driver-selectable winter mode starts the vehicle in 2nd gear. Winter mode also has a special second Reverse gear. Both are to help improve takeoff on slippery surfaces.

Seven-Speed:

The 2007 and later models use an electronic driver-adaptive 7-speed automatic. As with the five-speed, driver-adaptive programming adjusts shifts points to the driver's current driving style. The Touch Shift feature allows the driver to manually downshift and upshift by nudging the shift lever left or right from the Drive position. The Optimum Gear programming allows one-touch selection of the best gear for maximum acceleration or engine braking by holding the shift lever to the left of Drive for one second. There is also a driver-selectable Comfort Mode, which starts the vehicle in 2nd gear and upshifts at lower engine speeds. This is used to help improve control on slippery surfaces. Comfort mode also has a second reverse gear, which is also handy for times when traction is limited.

Gear Gear Ratio Overall Ratio MPH @ RPM
First 4.38 11.6 37 @ 6500 RPM
Second 2. 86 7.58 56 @ 6500 RPM
Third 1.92 5.09 84 @ 6500 RPM
Fourth 1.37 3.63 117 @ 6500 RPM
Fifth 1.00 2.65 130 @ 5236 RPM - electronically limited
Sixth 0.82 2.17 130 @ 4288 RPM - electronically limited
Seventh 0.73 1.93 130 @ 3814 RPM - electronically limited

Traction and Stability Control:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESP) compares the driver's intended course, via steering and braking inputs, to the vehicle's response, via lateral acceleration, rotation (yaw) and individual wheel speeds. ESP then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces excess engine power as needed to help correct understeer (plowing) or oversteer (fishtailing).

  • ESP incorporates the functions of Automatic Slip Control (ASR) traction control, which senses drive-wheel slip and individually brakes the slipping wheel or wheels, and/or reduces excess engine power, until control is regained.
